Burst Pipe Repair in Tucson

A supply line that lets go can put a lot of water through a house in minutes. Shut it off if you can do that safely, then call Tucson Emergency Plumbing to be connected with an independent plumber who can find the break and repair the line properly instead of clamping it.

Signs of a Burst Pipe

  • Water running or spraying inside a wall, a ceiling or a cabinet
  • Pressure dropping at every fixture in the house at once
  • A ceiling stain or bulge that grows while you stand there
  • No water after a cold night, then water everywhere when it thaws
  • The meter dial turning with every fixture shut off

If water is still escaping, stopping it comes first. In most Tucson homes the main shutoff is on the supply line where it enters the house at the front, often beside a hose bib or near the water softener loop in the garage, and there is a second valve in the meter box near the street. Turn off the water heater's gas control or breaker too, but only if you can reach it easily and are not standing in water.

What the Repair Includes

Not every call needs everything below. Ask the provider to separate the emergency work that stops the water from follow-up work you may want to schedule later.

Stopping the water

Isolating the failed section so the rest of the house can be turned back on. Sometimes that is one fixture valve, sometimes the whole main, depending on where the break sits.

Locating the actual break

Water follows framing and pipe runs, so the wet spot rarely marks the pipe. The access hole gets opened where the failure is, not where the stain showed up.

Repairing or replacing the run

Copper, CPVC, PEX, polybutylene and old galvanized pipe each take different fittings and methods. When the same run has failed twice, replacing it usually beats repairing it again.

Pressure test and clean finish

The repair is brought back up to pressure and checked before the water stays on, and you are shown what was replaced and where the shutoffs are.

Your Repair Options

What moves the price on a burst pipe is where the pipe sits and what it is made of. A split under a sink is an easy reach. A line inside a slab, in a second-story wall or in an attic in June is not. Galvanized supply lines in older midtown houses corrode from the inside, so when one point fails the next one is usually already forming, and replacing the whole run often costs less over two years than repairing it twice. Ask for the options and the price before anything is cut.

Polybutylene is worth its own mention. Plenty of Tucson-area homes built between the early 1980s and the mid-1990s were plumbed with gray polybutylene supply pipe and plastic or metal insert fittings. It becomes brittle with age and hard water, and it tends to fail at the fittings without warning. If that is what the plumber finds behind your wall, ask to see it, and ask what a staged replacement would involve before you repair one joint at a time.

Freezes matter here too. Tucson sits higher and colder than the desert further north, and a hard winter night reaches uninsulated hose bibs, exposed lines along an exterior wall and the supply tubing to an evaporative cooler on the roof. If a freeze is why you are reading this, ask the plumber to point out the other exposed sections while they are on site.

If the loss was slow rather than sudden, leak detection is the better place to start, and a line failing under the concrete is covered on our slab leak repair page. For the first ten minutes step by step, read what to do when a pipe bursts. If your water heater also gave out, our repair or replacement guide walks through that decision, or you can call the number now.

Burst Pipe Questions

What should I do before the plumber gets there?

Close the main valve at the front of the house or the valve in the meter box if you can reach it safely, move what you can off wet flooring, and keep people away from water near outlets or appliances. Do not try to open or patch a pressurized pipe. Then call Tucson Emergency Plumbing to be connected with an independent plumber.

What affects the cost of a burst pipe repair?

The pipe material, how far into the structure it runs and how much has to be opened to reach it. A split under a sink is a short job; a line in a slab or an upstairs wall is not. Ask the independent plumber to price the repair once the break is located, and do not let work start until you approve it.

Can this be fixed on the first visit?

Many burst pipe repairs can be done on the first visit, because the point is to stop the water and get service back. Bigger work, such as replacing a whole corroded or brittle run or patching drywall afterward, is usually scheduled separately. Ask the independent plumber which one yours is before you commit.

Why did my pipe burst when it never froze?

Age and corrosion cause plenty of failures on their own, and so does aging polybutylene, high supply pressure, a bad fitting or a pipe that has rubbed against framing for thirty years. Hard water speeds all of it up. See the full list of plumbing services if you are not certain which problem you have.
